If you've ever traced a server crash back to an unexplained glitch, you know that electromagnetic interference (EMI) is not a theoretical issue. A nearby cell tower, a faulty UPS, or even a lightning strike can inject noise into signal lines. The result? Bit errors, session drops, or corrupted storage.

At our steel mill and trading desk, engineers frequently ask:"What thickness do I need for 100 dB attenuation?" or"Does galvanised coating affect high-frequency shielding?" These questions deserve answers grounded in physics, not marketing.

Why Steel?

 

Copper conducts well, and aluminium is light. But for whole-room Faraday cages, steel wins on three counts:

  • Structural rigidity-you can build load-bearing walls, floors, and roofs.
  • Magnetic permeability-it absorbs low-frequency magnetic fields better than non-ferrous metals.
  • Cost per decibel-you get more shielding per dollar, especially in large enclosures.

We supply cold-rolled coils for projects ranging from 10-rack pods to 500-m² shielded halls. The common requirement: consistent gauge and weldable edges.

Key Parameters

 

Shielding effectiveness (SE) is measured in decibels. 60 dB means 1,000-fold reduction; 100 dB means 100,000-fold. Most commercial data centres aim for 80-100 dB across 100 kHz to 10 GHz-enough to block 4G/5G, Wi-Fi, and radar pulses.

But steel alone doesn't deliver that number. Real performance depends on:

 Continuous seam welding-gaps as small as 0.5 mm can leak up to 20 dB.

 Thickness uniformity-our coils hold ±0.05 mm tolerance, ensuring consistent welds.

 Surface finish-bare or zinc-coated? Zinc adds corrosion protection, but heavy layers may need cleaning before conductive gaskets are applied.

 

Over-specifying thickness (e.g., 4 mm) does not boost shielding beyond 2-3 mm for steel. What matters more is the absence of holes and the integrity of the ground bond.

 

Common Pitfalls

One frequent error:treating shielding as an afterthought. Retrofitting often forces compromises-cable trays that can't be routed cleanly, or doors without proper finger-stock contacts. Integrate shielding from day one to save money and avoid performance gaps.

Another mistake: ignoring the grounding system. A Faraday cage must tie to a single earth point with resistance under 1 ohm. Multiple grounds create ground loops that act as unintentional antennas, actually worsening EMI.

Data centres are never static. You will add racks, upgrade switches, or change cooling. A shielded room built with quality steel is adaptable-you can weld brackets or bolt new penetrations without degrading the shield, provided you follow proper resealing.

We have seen the consequences of cheap steel: warped panels, difficult welding, and poor corrosion resistance that forces early replacement. Investing in the right material upfront is always cheaper in the long run.
