Operational energy – heating, cooling, lighting – accounts for the bulk of a building's lifetime emissions. Steel framing enables highly efficient facade systems. Light-gauge steel framing (LGSF) creates continuous insulation layers with minimal thermal bridging, helping envelopes achieve airtightness below 1.0 m³/(h·m²) at 50 Pa – a level that significantly cuts HVAC loads. Coils produced via electric arc furnace (EAF) using high scrap ratios and renewable electricity can achieve 30–40% lower embodied carbon than blast-furnace routes. EAF-based products come with verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) – now a standard requirement for rigorous carbon accounting. Mill visits have confirmed that scrap sorting and energy management are tightly controlled, so EPD figures reflect actual production practices. For your project, this means you can report a credible cradle-to-gate carbon footprint that contributes directly to LEED v4.1 or BREEAM credits. Product-specific Type III EPDs are recognised as 1.5 products toward LEED's Materials & Resources category – a detail that adds real scoring weight.
