Special-function grades for wear-resistant mechanical parts and marine engineering
Martensitic 410 and duplex 2205 occupy complementary positions when standard austenitic grades fall short. 410 delivers hardness and wear resistance after heat treatment for mechanical components; 2205 combines roughly twice the yield strength of 316L with markedly higher chloride resistance for marine and offshore structures. Both are supplied as sheet and coil under ASTM A240/A240M, commonly in 2B finish.
Alloy Characteristics and Performance Basis
Type 410 (UNS S41000) is a 12 % chromium martensitic stainless steel with carbon typically 0.08–0.15 %. It can be hardened by quenching and tempering to achieve high hardness and wear resistance while retaining moderate corrosion resistance in mild environments. In the annealed condition specified by ASTM A240 it meets minimum tensile strength of approximately 450 MPa and yield of 205 MPa; after proper heat treatment hardness can exceed 200 HB and tensile values rise substantially.
Duplex 2205 (UNS S32205) contains 22.0–23.0 % chromium, 4.5–6.5 % nickel, 3.0–3.5 % molybdenum and 0.14–0.20 % nitrogen. The resulting austenite–ferrite microstructure yields a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN = %Cr + 3.3×%Mo + 16×%N) of approximately 35. ASTM A240 requires minimum tensile strength of 655 MPa and 0.2 % yield strength of 450 MPa-roughly double that of conventional 300-series grades-while elongation remains at least 25 %. Continuous service is generally limited to about –50 °C to 300 °C to avoid intermetallic precipitation.

Application Contexts
In wear-resistant mechanical parts, hardened 410 is selected for pump shafts, valve components, fasteners, cutting tools and industrial machinery parts where abrasion resistance and moderate corrosion resistance are required. Chinese and European equipment manufacturers commonly specify 410 sheet and strip for these duties because the grade can be heat-treated to the required hardness after fabrication.
For marine engineering, 2205 is the workhorse duplex grade. Its combination of high strength and PREN ≈ 35 makes it suitable for seawater piping, propeller shafts, pump components, offshore platform structural elements and desalination equipment. North Sea offshore platforms, Middle East desalination plants and Asian shipyards routinely use 2205 plate and coil where 316L would suffer pitting or stress-corrosion cracking under continuous chloride exposure.

Product Parameters
Typical supply ranges for industrial sheet and coil (annealed or solution-annealed, 2B finish common) follow ASTM A240 practice:
| Parameter | 410 (S41000) | 2205 (S32205) |
|---|---|---|
| Governing standard | ASTM A240 / ASME SA240 | ASTM A240 / ASME SA240 |
| Thickness | 0.3–8 mm (cold-rolled typical) | 0.5–12 mm (cold- or hot-rolled) |
| Width | 1000 / 1219 / 1500 mm (slit available) | 1000 / 1219 / 1500 mm (slit available) |
| Common finish | 2B, BA, polished | 2B, No.1, polished |
| Tensile strength (min) | ≈ 450 MPa (annealed) | 655 MPa |
| 0.2 % yield (min) | ≈ 205 MPa (annealed) | 450 MPa |
| Key advantage | Hardenable, wear resistance | High strength + PREN ≈ 35 |
| Available forms | Sheet, coil, slit coil, cut-to-size | Sheet, coil, slit coil, cut-to-size |
Material test certificates record heat chemistry and mechanical results, providing the traceability required by machinery and marine specifications.
Selection is function-driven. When hardness and abrasion resistance after heat treatment are the priority, 410 is chosen. When high strength combined with reliable performance in chloride-rich marine or offshore environments is required, 2205 becomes the practical solution. These two grades therefore serve as specialised industrial options for wear-critical mechanical parts and demanding marine engineering applications.
