SHANDONG PINJIE: Our Galvanized Steel Powers China's Largest Offshore Solar Project

At SHANDONG PINJIE NEW MATERIALS, we take immense pride in seeing our high-performance galvanized steel solutions play a critical role in landmark renewable energy projects across China. Recently, the first batch of subarrays in the 7th section of the CNNC Tianwan 2GW Tidal Flat Photovoltaic Demonstration Project-China's largest tidal flat solar farm to date-successfully connected to the grid. As the exclusive galvanized steel supplier for this national-level key project, we are honored to have provided the core structural materials that underpin its 25-year design lifespan and reliable operation in one of the harshest marine environments.

The Unmatched Challenge: Corrosion in Offshore Solar Construction

Offshore solar projects face far greater challenges than their onshore counterparts, and none is more threatening to long-term performance than saltwater corrosion. The Tianwan project, located in the thermal discharge waters of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, operates in an environment with chloride ion concentrations far exceeding typical coastal areas. Daily tides with a maximum range of over 4 meters mean steel structures are repeatedly exposed to salt spray, seawater immersion, and high humidity-conditions that would quickly degrade unprotected steel and compromise the entire solar farm.

This is why solar-grade galvanized steel has become the material of choice for modern renewable energy infrastructure. When our engineering team collaborated with China MCC22 (the project's general contractor) on material selection, long-term rust resistance was the non-negotiable top priority. We knew that only the highest-quality galvanized steel could withstand 25+ years of relentless salt attack and ensure the project's long-term return on investment.

Addressing Common Industry Concerns About Galvanized Steel Performance

Across the global solar sector, clients consistently ask us: does galvanized steel rust in conditions where salt spray and seawater are constant threats? The short answer is yes-no material is completely immune to corrosion over time-but galvanized steel offers a unique self-healing protection mechanism that sets it apart from other steel products.

When exposed to oxygen and moisture, the zinc coating on galvanized steel reacts first to form a dense, stable film of zinc carbonate that seals the underlying steel from corrosive elements. In standard atmospheric conditions, regular galvanized steel offers decades of reliable protection. For the extreme demands of offshore solar, however, standard coatings are simply not enough.

This leads to the next question we often hear: will galvanized steel rust prematurely in high-chloride marine environments? Without proper specification and quality control, it absolutely can. That's why we developed a premium solar-specific galvanized steel formulation that meets ISO 12944-2:2017 CX corrosion class-the highest standard for severe marine environments. Over a 6-month collaboration period, our R&D team worked closely with China MCC22's engineering department to adjust our galvanizing process specifically for the Tianwan site's unique conditions: we increased the minimum zinc coating thickness from 85μm to 120μm and implemented a double-passivation process to enhance resistance to chloride ion corrosion.

Our Rigorous Quality Control: Ensuring Every Component Performs

At SHANDONG PINJIE, we understand that even the best material design is meaningless without uncompromising quality control. For the Tianwan project, we implemented a dedicated quality assurance program tailored to the project's strict requirements:

All solar mounting brackets, pile foundations, and connection bolts supplied were manufactured from our premium solar-grade galvanized steel

Every batch underwent third-party testing by SGS for zinc coating thickness, adhesion, and uniformity

We provided full digital traceability for every component, allowing the construction team to verify coating specifications and production history at any time

Our on-site technical support team worked closely with China MCC22 to provide installation guidance, ensuring the zinc coating remained intact during transportation and assembly

Many of our clients also wonder: is galvanized steel rust proof enough to protect multi-billion-dollar solar assets for their entire design life? The Tianwan project provides a definitive, real-world answer to this question. By combining our high-performance material with rigorous quality control and proper installation practices, we have created a system that will deliver reliable corrosion protection for the full 25-year operational life of the plant.

The project team's innovative "land-based pre-assembly + offshore integrated lifting" construction method perfectly complemented our material's properties. By assembling entire galvanized steel support modules on stable ground before transporting them to sea, they minimized the risk of scratches, dents, or seawater exposure that could damage the protective zinc layer-maximizing the long-term durability of every component.

A Benchmark for the Global Offshore Solar Industry

The Tianwan project is more than just a solar farm-it is a groundbreaking "solar + nuclear" hybrid energy system that sets a new standard for clean energy integration. The thermal discharge water from the nuclear plant boosts solar panel efficiency by 2-3 percentage points in winter, a unique synergy that only delivers long-term value if the entire infrastructure remains reliable for decades. Our galvanized steel ensures that this efficiency gain will be sustained for the full 25-year operational life of the plant.

This project's success validates our position as a leading supplier of high-performance galvanized steel for the renewable energy sector. It demonstrates that with proper material specification, rigorous quality control, and technical collaboration, galvanized steel is more than capable of meeting the most demanding requirements of offshore solar construction.

As the global transition to clean energy accelerates, offshore solar will play an increasingly important role in meeting the world's electricity needs. At SHANDONG PINJIE NEW MATERIALS, we are committed to continuing our research and development in galvanizing technology, pushing the boundaries of zinc coating durability to deliver even more durable, cost-effective solutions for our clients worldwide. Together, we are building a sustainable future-one galvanized steel component at a time.
