Standing on the muddy banks of the Bassac (Hau) River in early 2025, watching the first piles go in for an 850-metre multi-lane steel box-girder bridge that will finally stitch southern Vietnam to Cambodia, I kept coming back to one stubborn fact. In the Vietnamese Mekong Delta the air rarely drops below 79 % relative humidity and annual rainfall routinely sits between 1 500 and 2 000 mm (Meteorological characteristics of the Mekong Delta 2014–2020, Ecosystems Transformation, 2024; ERA5 reanalysis 1980–2020). That combination turns ordinary structural steel into a corrosion experiment and makes on-site welding a seasonal gamble.
The main contractor's brief was therefore uncompromising: material that would form its own protective patina under prolonged river vapour, weld cleanly even when ambient humidity hit 85 %, and arrive in phased lots that matched the 2025–2028 construction calendar. After more than a decade of ASEAN bridge and port jobs, our team at Shandong Pinjie settled on two grades we already knew performed under similar tropical exposure-Q355GNH weathering steel for the main girders and Z275 high-zinc galvanized coil for secondary members. Laboratory alternate-immersion tests (reported in Special Steel, 2022) had shown the Q355GNH rust layer stabilises with roughly 18 % protective α-FeOOH, cutting relative corrosion rate to less than half that of ordinary Q345B. We further tightened the carbon-equivalent window so that ultrasonic testing of every production weld returned clean results even under the wet-season conditions the site actually experienced.

Between February 2025 and mid-2026 we moved 7 800 tonnes in eleven separate consignments. Average door-to-site lead time settled at 41 days-longer than our normal 20–35-day cycle because of staggered milestones and cross-border customs, yet still well inside the 60–90-day industry norm for comparable Southeast-Asian orders. The difference mattered: no idle cranes, no liquidated-damages exposure during the heaviest rains, and continuous site activity for eighteen months. Twelve-month exposure coupons recovered in mid-2026 confirmed that the weathering surface had already locked in the expected protective film, giving the client a measurable reduction in projected life-cycle maintenance.
What stays with me is not the tonnage but the quiet discipline of matching metallurgy to microclimate. When the humidity sits that high and the monsoon arrives on schedule, the difference between a bridge that lasts and one that constantly needs re-coating is decided long before the first girder is lifted-in the chemistry of the coil and the reliability of the logistics chain that delivers it.
